It is no secret the job market is tight, but the good news is people are still landing jobs. It may just require creativity and the ability to think out of the box.

These days acing a job interview requires some finesse. Here are some tips to help prepare for a successful job interview.

Make a Lasting First Impression

Even when applying for a job at a corporation that may have a relaxed dress code, it is still a good idea to put one's best foot forward. This is not the time to wear one's favorite pair of jeans with holes in them or to don a pair of scuffed up shoes.

Keep in mind that first impressions are lasting. Look as professional as possible. If an outfit is wrinkled, iron it in advance, and women, this is not the time to try out that new pair of pumps that have been in the closet. That is how accidental falls and slip-ups occur which can lead to nothing but embarrassment. Try to look one's best, and stick with the tried and true.

Always Be Prepared for the Job Interview

Do not go into a job interview unprepared. That is a big no-no. It may sound like common sense, but people do it everyday. With all of the information available on the internet, there is really no excuse not to be prepared. Check out the company's website. Read articles about the company and its staff members. Ask friends what they know. Apply due diligence. Learn as much as possible about every facet of the operation to make it a successful job interview.

It is also good to enthusiastically shake hands with the interviewer using a firm grip. Smile some, and look them in the eye, but don't be too familiar. Maintain a sense of professionalism especially if it is a formal environment.

Do not refer to the interviewers by their first names (unless they give permission to do so). Don't lie in response to a question or when it comes to what is typed on a resume. Telling the truth may be the most important part of a successful job interview. Invariably, lies always come back to haunt the liar.

How to Show Confidence in a Job Interview

It may be difficult not to appear desperate in today's economy, but pretend, if necessary. Recruiters can smell desperation a mile off, and nobody likes the scent. No matter how badly one may need the job, try to maintain composure. Look confident, and act like a winner from the beginning of the interview until the end of it. That will help ensure that it is a successful job interview.

With such stiff competition these days, it is best to do whatever it takes to stand out. Thank-you notes help achieve this goal. A brief, typed thank you can go a long way. It is also helpful to get the business cards of each interviewer in order to make the task of writing a note that much easier. In addition to thanking them for their time, it is also a good idea to briefly reiterate some of the highlights from one's resume.

Whatever happens in the scheme of things, just remember to stay focused and make the best impression possible. If one is prepared, it is easier to be more confident. If a person is dressed the part, the interviewer can better see the person in the part. Any successful job interview requires work. Just keep persevering, and don't give up.
