You can handle anything they throw at you. But how can you get your foot in the door for that interview?

Your Resume is excellent - you've paid close attention to formatting, correct information and application of your skills to meet employers' expectations. Your Cover Letter matches and expands on your Resume. You use the best job sites for your type of work and industry as well as your own expectations for working. You practice and rehearse what you'll say at that important interview. But you still haven't received an invitation for an interview. What's wrong?

Get Someone Else To Read Your Resume and Cover Letter

Chances are there might be something you've missed. It might be as simple as a typo error, or an omission that you have overlooked. An extra set of eyes will not only help find any potential errors, the person might also give an opinion on how it looks to someone who isn' t you - meaning a more nonpartisan or unbiased viewpoint.

Does Your Resume Match The Type Of Work You Are Trying To Get

Your Resume may be great - but not for the type of work you are applying for. Different jobs require different types of Resume as well as skill set. Are you trying to get a job that requires lots of experience, but you only have a few jobs and used a Chronological Resume. Your Resume may not show off your skill set to your advantage. Certain jobs require a CV - which uses a slightly different format than a regular Resume - usually used for Engineers, or those who must prove credentials and accreditation. Actors use a type of CV - as personal information is critical in applying for acting roles.

Does Your Resume Match The Job Position

Ensure your objectives and skill set match the job requirements - not just in general. Be specific - do you have the skills requested in the job posting or not? You may not have to have all of the skills, but if you only have one or two of the requested set, it is doubtful you'll get an interview.

Don't be afraid to go for a job that is an advancement. But you must ensure you can do the job - and you need to prove it to the employer via your Resume and Cover Letter. This means your skill set must be applicable to the job applied for - and you have to point it out to the employer. Don't expect the employer to put two and two together - that's your job - to convince the employer you are the right candidate.
