Getting an interview is key to landing a great job. Those who prepare for the interview itself set themselves apart from others.
Landing an interview is a huge step in the job hunting process. Knowing that someone liked what they saw on a resume and cover letter is very rewarding. However, taking the time to prepare for an interview can be just as important as taking the time to carefully craft an eye-catching resume. Realize the Importance of PreparationMany people go to the job interview feeling confident, although they may not have prepared at all. In the past, people may have been able to get by with little to no preparation for a job interview. Now, employers and interviewers expect more. Research the CompanyWith the Internet and other available sources of information, interviewees should be able to research the company that has called for an interview. Research the mission and vision statements; be sure that the statements align with your own personal beliefs. Check historical data and discover when the company was founded, how it was founded and who founded it. Saying, “I am impressed that your company has been around for over 40 years,” shows that the interviewee did research and took the time to care about the interview. Ask Questions about Interview Details Interviewees should not be afraid to ask questions when they receive a phone call for an interview appointment. Asking about proper attire for the interview, driving directions or verifying the length of time the interview may take are all perfectly acceptable questions to ask. Conduct a Mock InterviewAsking a close friend to conduct a mock interview with you prior to the actual interview will help to calm nerves and reduce nonverbal communication barriers prior to the appointment. Interviewees should look up various interview questions and techniques. The mock interviewer should ask questions exactly the way they would be asked during the actual interview. Practicing answers will give the interviewee a chance to practice what he or she might say in that particular situation. Job Location InformationIf an interviewee is unsure of how to physically get to the job location, printing out maps or actually driving there a few days before the appointment may be a good idea. Arriving late to an interview sets a bad precedent for the entire process. Organize Resume and Portfolio Managers and human resource personnel may receive hundreds of resumes. A job applicant should bring extra copies of the resume to the interview in case a resume gets lost. It is also a good idea to have an extra copy for reference during the interview. The applicant should also remember a portfolio or previous work they would like to show to the potential employer. With stiff competition for jobs, making a good first impression is more important than ever when applying for an open job position. Taking the time to prepare before a job interview will pay off with less nervousness, more confidence and a better opportunity at that dream job.
